Feedback.

"I went into it not knowing much about cars/racing but everyone was so great explaining things and the hands- on technical experience helped me understand things faster”

  • What is the Student Motorsport Experience?
The Torus Student Motorsport Experience is just that, a place to gain motorsport experience! It provides the opportunity for you and your friends and classmates to run your own single seater race team in one of the most competitive championships in the UK. Each weekend is tailored exactly to provide as little or as much support as needed and hit specific learning objectives that your university or college may require. In essence, it provides the opportunity to put your engineering theory to the test in a hands on environment whilst also building on your team and soft skills that future employers find so valuable. Be part of the team and launch your motorsport career!
  • What are the requirements for getting involved?
All those involved must be at least 18 years of age to get involved. We also require at least 5 team members to a car for a weekend however don't worry if you don't have enough for team or are just an individual, as there may be people in your university also interested who you just haven't met yet. It's not uncommon for lifelong friendships to made during one of our experiences.
  • What can I expect to do during the experience?
During a weekend, each member of the team will be allocated a role. These roles are similar to those you would find within any motorsport team. Each team member will be provided with all the information they need to carry out this role and the typical tasks they will be expected to perform. Each experience weekend will consist of a day of testing, a qualifying session and two or three races. During the test day, this is your opportunity to experiment with set-up changes on the car, analyse on board footage and data and discuss with the driver with the aim of getting the best time on track. You will also likely encounter problems as you push the car to the limit that will require your quick thinking to resolve. Qualifying is where you put your theory to the test against other teams in the paddock. You will make strategy calls and use all the skills in your arsenal to get the best grid position. Then, it's onto the races. Again, you will talk with the driver about how he can improve his performance for the race and where he can make up time. You may also need to adapt the car to ever changing weather conditions or make a call to change the set up for a better overall race time rather than a one lap sprint. As this is going on, you will need to balance this with keeping an eye on your opponent's whilst ensuring that the car is in a safe and mechanically sound condition for each session. At the end, you debrief, share lessons learned and hopefully celebrate with a few well-earned trophies.
  • How do I get involved?
The best way to get involved is to share your interest in the experience with a lecturer, supervisor or someone within your school or university and see if they would be happy for you to share their contact details with us. This is even better if you have a group of class mates who would also be interested in the experience so you already have a team ready to go. We will then discuss the experience with your school/university about how we can best integrate the experience during your current studies.
  • Who drives the car?
We at Torus want to promote young drivers who might struggle to otherwise get the opportunity to drive a competitive single seater. We also want drivers who are willing to collaborate work as part of a team and therefore carefully select our own drivers who align with our brand values. Because we work with students we are able to offer our seats at a discounted rate to other teams of the same size. If you would be interested in driving one of our single seaters and think our mission statement aligns with you, please get in touch.
  • Do you offer work experience?
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer work experience at this time but please follow our socials as we hope to change this in the future.
  • Are there other way I can get involved?
Absolutely. We also offer the opportunity to share real race data with universities from our onboard data logger that captures hundreds of channels from each event that can be used for analysis in workshops or as part of dissertations. We also offer students the opportunity to design and develop performance parts for our car that can then tested in a real world application.
  • What is Monoposto?
Monoposto is the largest single seater club in the UK racing across the most iconic UK tracks. The Monoposto Championship was founded in 1958 and has been at the forefront of club level motorsport since its creation.
  • What car will I be working on?
We have multiple cars that you may be working on during a weekend experience. This include a Formula 3 car and a F1400 car. We also offer a service to source and provide any university or college with a suitable car of their own which can be used to expand the experience straight from track to classroom.
